COLDWATER HIGH SCHOOL: 2
After a slow start to the match, the team collectively knocked the rust off and made a second half comeback to beat visiting Coldwater 3-2 Saturday morning. Coldwater opened the scoring in the 11th minute when a second chance ball dropped in the Otsego box, and was finished off, after a corner kick. They added to their lead following a throw in deep in Bulldog territory just five minutes into the second half. The majority of the chances to that point had gone the Bulldogs' way, but the Cardinals had been clinical in capitalizing on Otsego's mistakes.
Thirteen minutes into the second frame, Otsego came to life and netted a goal from a corner kick. Rylie Henckel assisted Senior Captain Lexus Putt to make the score 2-1 in favor of Coldwater. Just seven minutes later, Rylie leveled the score as she received a long through pass from Aleah Putt and finished past a helpless Cardinal goalkeeper. After some more sustained possession, Otsego was pinning their opponent back. The breakthrough came with 11 minutes to go on a sister-sister connection. Avery Henckel drove up the right side and beat a host of Cardinal defenders to send a slotted ball into the center where Rylie was waiting. The Junior attacker made no mistake in finishing from close range to put her team a goal ahead.
The Dawgs held on those last ten minutes to close the game out. Senior Captain Mikayla Bryant led a defensive effort from a relatively inexperienced set of players on the day. Of the other five players who combined to play at the back, only Avery Henckel who dropped in at left back for the final 6 minutes, had significant Varsity experience coming into the match. Liv Brown, Hannah Klok, Aleah Putt, and Freshman Steph Scott worked hard throughout the match in an effort to neutralize the Coldwater attack.
Otsego travels to Harper Creek Monday for a 6pm kickoff.
