PLAINWELL HIGH SCHOOL: 3
Monday night's rivalry matchup between Plainwell and Otsego's girls soccer teams held more than just bragging rights for the teams. At least a share of the Wolverine Conference title was on the line, with Allegan needing a win at South Haven the next evening in order to create a tie atop the standings. From the onset, this match was dominated by the skill and passing efficiency of Plainwell. Otsego spent much of the match defending vigorously and trying their best to make positive passes once they had won the ball. Though nobody could question the Bulldogs' work rate and effort, the caliber and quality of skill from their opponents was too much to overcome on the night.
After giving up two goals in the first half, and without much pressure put on Plainwell's Freshman goalkeeper, spirits were not high. Otsego had clawed their way back from deficits before, but this seemed different. The team knew that they were overmatched, but in a rivalry game anything is possible. Plainwell came out just as fiery in the second frame, and extinguished the flames of a couple early Otsego attacks. From then on it was almost academic, and the final horn sounded on the Bulldogs' title hopes.
It appeared the match on the field was not won or lost on the day, nor during the season at present, but in the preparation in the months and years leading up to the match. Plainwell players showed their skill, precision, and poise under pressure. Otsego showed definite flashes, but were clearly second best on the night. The coaches and team spoke after the match about the concept of "winning the offseason", putting in extra work in the "other" 9 months of the year. To change a trend, to develop skills and complete players, to build a community and a soccer culture. . . It will take more time, effort, and dedication from everyone in and around the program. The girls seem eager and ready for this challenge, which is a huge step in the right direction!
