[SHADOW] WAYLAND UNION HIGH SCHOOL: 1
Though the weather was chilly, the Bulldog attack heated up as the game progressed on Thursday evening at Bulldog Stadium. The team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 3 minutes in on the back of an Erica Drobny strike from distance over the Wayland keeper. Gracie VerHage assisted the goal. Wayland answered back by converting a well-taken penalty kick to draw level. The first half was about knocking a bit of the rust off for Otsego, and the team didn't possess well but looked sharp and dangerous on the counterattack. The second goal came a few minutes before half when Cait Kitchen turned a defender and hit a shot from 22yds out on the left side. The keeper dove low to her left for the save, and Drobny crashed the net and put home the rebound for her brace.
The second half saw two Gracie VerHage goals, one from the penalty spot and one from a direct free kick along the left touchline, beat the keeper to give the Bulldogs a decisive lead. Wayland pressed for much of the second half to draw a goal or two back, but were denied by strong play from Otsego's center back pairing of Alexis Petty and Cayla Koshar. Add in a few excellent saves in big moments from Sophomore keeper Matti Rayman, and great pressure on the ball from the entire Otsego team, and the game ended 4-1 to the home team.
Player of the Game honors go to goalkeeper Matti Rayman who had 8 saves on the day.
The Bulldogs look to improve their possession, command of the midfield area, and aerial play next Monday when they travel to face Harper Creek.
