GODFREY-LEE: 0
Otsego traveled up 131 to Wyoming on Thursday to take on non-conference opponent Godfrey-Lee. The Rebels came into Otsego and edged the Dawgs by a goal early last season, and Otsego was looking forward to another tight match this time around. Both teams showed a lot of skill in the early going, and the midfield battle was an interesting one. Each team had their chances in the first ten minutes, but neither could capitalize. In the 14th minute, Josh Loll took a throw in from the left touch line that sailed over the heads of the Lee center backs. The ball bounced once, and Jace Engels and the Rebels' goalkeeper both rose into the air to win the ball at the edge of the six yard box. Jace got to the ball first and paid the price as Lee's goalkeeper clattered into him, but not before he got the vital touch that took it over the keeper and into the net.
The first half was coming to a close, and fans were already starting to head to the concession stand and restrooms when Josh Loll decided to take matters into his own hands and extend the Bulldog lead. Josh battled to win the ball just outside the Rebel 18 yard box near the top left corner. Once the ball was down at his feet he shook off a challenge from behind, drove infield shifting the ball past two more Lee defenders, and laced a shot past the keeper with just over a minute left to play in the half. Otsego took the two goal lead into halftime.
The second half was rather balanced, and saw both teams create some good scoring opportunities. Otsego's best chance came from Senior Addison Atwater when he rang a shot off the crossbar midway through the half that could have put a dagger in the hosts. Senior keeper Jayden Dentler made a few solid saves in the second frame to keep the Rebels' scoresheet blank. Tired legs on the end of a three match week allowed Lee to have more possession in the final 10 minutes of the match, and forced some key players to sub off late in the match. The reserve players did a great job plugging the gaps and staying defensively responsible.
Otsego next takes on Allegan on Monday in a huge Wolverine Conference showdown.
