THREE RIVERS HIGH SCHOOL: 1
Otsego traveled to Three Rivers Monday night riding a 3 match win streak, looking to extend it in a Wolverine Conference clash. The match was controlled, in large part, by the Dawgs from the opening whistle. Three Rivers showed they could be dangerous on the counter, but struggled to build consistent possession. This was due, in large part, to Otsego's high pressure style and their ability to keep the ball in the Wildcats' defending third for chunks of the match.
The first goal came just 6 minutes into the match when Josh Loll rifled home a shot from 50 yards out off the fingertips of the outstretched goalkeeper. Both teams had their attacking opportunities, with the better of Three Rivers' coming up the left flank. Otsego was balanced in their attack, and spread the Three Rivers defense thin. It paid off in the 33rd minute as Jerin Jameson clipped the ball over the traffic and to the back post finding fellow Captain Addison Atwater for the authoritative header. The Dawgs went into halftime leading 2-0, and out-shooting their opponent 10-3.
The second half began with Three Rivers building a bit of possession and looking to jump back into the game quickly. The hosts created, and capitalized on, a brilliant overload just four minutes into the second half. Two Bulldog defenders were left marking three Wildcat attackers at the far post when Justin Garza whipped a great ball in from left to right. Derek Veenstra made no mistake with his header, tightening the contest to 2-1. The goal was scored decidedly against the run of play, however, and the Dawgs knew they were still in control of the match. The Dawgs would answer back in the 48th minute off a Keegan Timmerman goal, assisted by Addison Atwater. From that point on the Dawgs delighted their traveling fans with well weighted long balls out of the back, breathtaking dribbling runs, and tough ball winning in the midfield.
A number of great chances went just wide, or were saved by the Three Rivers goalkeeper, to keep the scoreline tight over much of the final 20 minutes of play. Bulldog goalkeeper Jayden Dentler had to make 3 saves off of Three Rivers shooters in the second half, but a shanked clearance from his own defender may have been his biggest test of the half. He dealt with it well, as he has all season, and the team came away with a 3-1 victory. Josh Loll and Keegan Timmerman were co-offensive Men of the Match, and the defensive award for the night was also shared between Jayden Dentler and Ian McClellan.
